Live Pics of the Sony Ericsson Paris; HOT

This could be one of the hottest UIQ devices… Ever! Spy shots of the Sony Ericsson Paris (P5i) made the rounds a while back but this is the first time we’re seeing crystal clear live pictures of this hotty, and we’re in love. Slim form, sleek styling, finger and stylus-operated 2.8″ touchscreen; it’s all good. The Paris will run UIQ 3.2 supported by a 360 MHz CPU. Integrated GPS, WiFi, UMTS and an M600-style keypad are just a few of the highlights that we’re really loving. And let’s not forget the 5 megapixel camera that we know will be solid Sony Ericsson quality. Still no word on a firm release date for the Paris but we’ll keep an eye peeled as we’re definitely looking forward to getting our hands on one.

BlackBerry 9000 Reviewed Early (Verdict: Fantastic)

Crackberry, the BlackBerry fan site, bought a BlackBerry 9000 off of eBay for $828 and reviewed it. Why’s this notable? Because the phone doesn’t go on sale until July or August. This fact doesn’t stop them from throwing lots of praise on the phone now, however, saying that the “9000 will leaves [sic] every other BlackBerry made to date in the dust.” The 9000 still takes a long time to start up—Crackberry says the software should be updated before launch and that might speed it up a bit—but the keyboard is nice and OS 4.6 is also “smooth”, “fast” and “pretty.” The display is “bright and crisp”, and 3G is definitely welcome. If you even have the smallest interest in BlackBerry, this is a phone to consider.

RIM recruiting iPhone developer

Yes, you read the headline correctly. According to an internal job listing that happened to make its way into the public arena, RIM is looking for a developer that is well versed in iPhone application development. The company seems very hesitant to go into details, even on an internal listing board. Here’s an excerpt:

“If you’re a pro at developing software for MAC’s then this it the position for you. It’s a new development team at RIM, so you’re getting in a the very early stages when joining this team.”

So much for remaining confidential, but RIM is clearly up to something here. What is clear, however, is that they’re recruiting someone who is good with both Cocoa and Objective C, Javascript, XML, and more. “Mac OS X exposure (end user, administrator, developer)” is also listed as a requisite requirement. Given the specifics of the listing, we here at BGR think that RIM is looking to do one of three things. They’re either trying to develop Desktop-based Mac OS software to communicate with BlackBerrys , assembling a team to reverse engineer the iPhone touchscreen as they move towards developing their own touch-based device, or they’re looking to develop a version of BlackBerry Connect for the iPhone. Any other guesses out there?

BlackBerry 9000: Internal Spec Sheet Answers Your Questions

Enough with the speculation, the rumors, the spokespersons commenting on our blogging abilities — we’re setting it all straight right here with this internal RIM doc we just got a hold of. You might be thinking that cover page above is the best part — it is pretty sexy isn’t it — well, it’s not. We’ve got the rundown on everything from language support, to themes, to the redone media appplications. We’re talking the browser, the setup wizard, Wi-Fi, streaming video, and anything else you could want. The latest release date we’re hearing is  actually July now (go figure), and that RIM is working on those power problems with the quickness. As we’ve been told, the newer builds are definitely better but not quite there yet. We’ve got a good idea of when it’s going to be announced, but we’ll keep that one to ourselves for now. You know you want to jump over to our gallery!

T-Mobile promises Android handset by Q4 of this year

While chances are good that someone will beat them to the punch, it looks like T-Mobile intends to come out swinging in the Android race. The company has just announced that it plans to ship its first Android-based handsets by the end of 2008. T-Mobile revealed precious few details about the actual device, but did say that the initial launch will be used as a way to gauge consumer product needs, and that they are committed to responding to user feedback. They also emphasized the need for carriers to focus on keeping Android handsets safe and secure. Following the initial launch, the company expects to implement the Linux-based OS across their product line, offering multiple Android handsets, each with a specific target audience.

Archos Updates the 605 WiFi With a GPS Add-On

The 605 WiFi was cool and all, but it has been given a sweet GPS injection thanks to a new add-on that delivers driving directions and free or paid traffic functions. The system is even sophisticated enough to simulate position changes in the event that a signal is lost. Expect a 30GB of the 605 Wi-Fi with the GPS receiver in May for $400. If you currently own a 605 WiFi, you can pick up the navigation add-on separately for $130.

The 3G iPhone may look ‘radically different’

Most of you are probably sick of all this “3G iPhone is coming, no wait it’s not… no wait it is!” but the (UK) Times has some new info the whet your appetite. In reporting on the difficulty Apple is having selling the iPhone in Europe, which jibes with reports from earlier today, the Times reports that many Europeans are waiting for the 3G version of the phone. In Europe, 3G isn’t seen as a luxury, but an everyday feature that most phones should have.

So, then, the info. Apple is said to have asked its its Asian suppliers to manufacture some 200,000 3G iPhones by May’s end; Apple wants 2 million iPhones ready by June when it’s expected to launch—WWDC?

Even juicier is reports that the iPhone will look “radically different”, possibly with a QWERTY keyboard. Analysts are all over the place, with some suggesting that Apple may eventually release several iPhone versions. That’s what Digg’s Kevin Rose said last month, too, for those of you who hang on his every word.

T-Mobile’s 3G Network Rolling Out May in NYC

We’ve been waiting for 3G on T-Mobile longer than we’ve been waiting for The Police to get back together, and it looks like May will be the month that all this patience finally pays off. TmoNews is pegging the first launch to be in NYC, and spreading to the rest of the country’s major cities throughout the rest of 2008 (list after the jump). Of course, it’s just a rumor so far, but it does seem to coincide with this HTC Touch Dual Into Mobile found on the FCC, which is supposedly headed toward T-Mobile and features 3G HSDPA. We’ll post as we learn more, though we’re hopeful that this could finally be it for T-Mobile users to not pull down mobile data at 1996 dial-up speeds.

BlackBerry 9000 to sport front-facing video camera?

What’s that RIM has up their sleeves for the BlackBerry 9xxx? Could it be a front-facing video camera? According to Spanish blogger Luis Rodriguez, the answer is yes. It seems that Rodriguez has had a prototype version of the upcoming 9xxx on hand for a little while now, and recently revealed a couple of interesting bits of information. According to Rodriguez, the new BlackBerry will sport an external microSD slot, similar to the current Pearl 2 models, a bigger battery to handle the 3G radio, and…wait for it…a front-facing video camera for video-chatting. Hmm. We haven’t heard any info that would suggest the presence of a front facing camera, but we suppose a surprise or two from RIM wouldn’t be unwelcome. If the rumor is true, let’s just hope it doesn’t further contribute to the power management issues that seem to be plaguing the new handset.
