Like many people who live in Verizon country, I have eagerly awaited the carrier’s latest—and definitely greatest—feature phone, the LG VX10000 Voyager. Yesterday UPS dropped it off, and I’ve been playing with it constantly ever since. It is a powerful thing, ambitious in that it combines much of what we like about both the iPhone and the BlackBerry into a single compact system. But it has flaws that make it hard for me to give the highest marks, especially with an after-rebate price tag of $300.

Originally rumored for an announcement as early as tomorrow, icaka over on Esato’s forums is now reporting that Sony Ericsson’s new be-all, end-all superphone — the so-called P5i — has been sent back to the shop for retooling and won’t make a public debut until May or June of next year. While it could be argued that the P1i is hot (or at least warm) off the factory line, a top-5 phone manufacturer certainly can’t rest on its laurels — and if the listed specs here are even close to accurate, they’re staying up on their game: think 2.8 inch VGA display, integrated GPS, WiFi, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, HSUPA (yes, UPA, not DPA), and 128MB of RAM on board. Even better, it’ll all be packed into a slim, light slider form factor that allegedly looks something like this concept art. Sounds just a smidge too good to be true, we know. Then again, by the time mid 2008 rolls around, is there any line item here that shouldn’t be standard fare on a high end handset? Here’s hoping!

Our first look at Microsoft backed ZenZui came back in March when we discovered a new mobile browser that promises to make “painful loading delays a thing of the past.” In a call today with the folks at ZenZui, I learned that they will now and forevermore be known as Zumobi, along with new details about the browser and information on how the general public can get involved in the beta that launches on December 14th.

Looks like Apple just published firmware v1.1.2 for the iPhone; hit the download link to grab it yourself because iTunes hasn’t yet gotten wise to the fact that it’s out. Details to follow, but don’t expect jailbreak or the unactivated Safari workaround hack to still be functional, ok? (… aaaand we’re watching our download speed drop as our readers are grabbing the file. Rockin’.) Update: TIFF jailbreak exploit is dead. Sorry people. More below.

The O2 Xda orbit 2 enters officialdom and adds yet another name to an already confused HTC device. The TouchFLO-enabled replacement for the 2006-ish Xda orbit brings a pile of new niceties to the line and a pretty slick new look to boot. Featuring 128 MB / 256 MB of RAM and ROM, a 400 MHz Qualcomm CPU, GPS, quad-band GSM, HSDPA (we’ve heard tri-band and also only 2100), and a 3 megapixel camera with typical Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity thrown in for good measure. Availability is slated for early December from a rock bottom €99 (roughly $140) on contract. If you’re in the know and can provide frequency clarity for us, please do.

Right on cue, Sony Ericsson’s busted out a trio of new handsets today, including it’s latest K-series model, the K660, and a pair of new Walkman phones: the W380 and W890. As we knew yesterday, the K660 is a HSDPA handset whose big selling point is its proficiency at web browsing, including a landscape mode, among other web-friendly features. The W380 clamshell phone, on the other hand, drops the 3G, but provides plenty of the usual Walkman-related features, including gesture control, and SE’s trademark Track ID, while the W890 ups things considerably with HSDPA connectivity and a better-than-the-norm 3.2 megapixel camera. The Google Phone has been announced, and instead of being manufactured by just one company, it’s an open software platform that’s going to be included on phones made by HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung. And best of all, those phones are going to be available on Sprint and T-Mobile. Plus, it’s going to be available in China, Japan, Germany, Italy, and Spain. The 34 members of the Open Handset Alliance will throw in their expertise (example, Nvidia with their graphical abilities, Skype with their VoIPing) and offer the collective goods under an open source licensing agreement. Hell, Google might not even put their logo on the phone itself—they just want to sell advertisements to users through it.

The Wall Street Journal tweaks the hype for Google’s supposedly hours-away mobile announcement with a boilerplate of speculation about how Google’s open platform will bust open the wireless industry by igniting “a race among Silicon Valley developers, long shut out of the wireless industry, to come up with new applications for cellphones,” like HDTV, multiplayer mobile games, actual multi-tasking, and other exciting, previously impossible coolness. Bonus rumormongering: Sprint and T-Mobile name-checked again as Google’s probable partners.

The mobile world is about to get a little crazier. Reliable rumors are pointing to Monday as the day that Google will unveil their new mobile phone platform. Codenamed “Android”, the software suite is expected to contain a “complete mobile phone software stack,” incorporating new elements on top of a linux-based OS platform. It’s unclear if an actual handset will be on display, but sources close to the project have revealed that Japan’s KDDI and NTT DoCoMo will be linked somehow to the Monday annoucement. Those two carriers are expected to join over 30 other partners in what will be known as the Open Handset Alliance, a collection of companies that have signed on to Google’s mobile handset project. We’ll keep you updated as the details come in, but until then…the countdown has begun!

Is it just us, or did this thing take a glancing blow from the ugly stick? Not a direct, brutal strike by any means, but it seems like there may have been a bit of an exchange before this sucker’s announcement. Anyway, yeah, Samsung’s i780 is all official now — which we now know has absolutely no relation to the BlackJack2 for AT&T — and while it may not be taking earning any points for sheer beauty, it makes up for the indiscretion with sheer braun. You get Windows Mobile 6 Professional (yes, Professional, not Standard), assisted GPS, a 2.6 inch 320 x 320 display, 256MB of ROM and 128MB of RAM, WiFi, and that crazy optical touchpad that lets you navigate via mouse pointer. Sadly, the triband GSM and single-band 3G are going to keep this one well off US shores, but then again, keep in mind that the i600 spawned the i607 BlackJack back in the day — so stay positive, folks.
