Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 hands on

Monday
Jun 16,2008

If you asked the general public what the #1 Windows Mobile device they’re waiting for, you’d probably lose count of how many times people said XPERIA. Sony Ericcson, for the first time, has entered into the Windows Mobile market, and our first impressions? Wow. You really couldn’t throw better specs on this thing if you tried. From your local flavor of UMTS/HSDPA, to an optical joystick (fire!), to a whopping 800×480 VGA screen, and even cool funky notification lights, this thing is packed! Let’s not forget the physical design of the device as it’s one of the coolest and hippest-looking phones we’ve seen in a very long time. Since our unit isn’t a production version, the software runs a little slow. Even so, in most tasks, it performs very well. We can’t wait to play with a final production unit. It has us that impressed! One major flaw, though… Do you really want to know? The keyboard! Listen guys, if you’re going to throw on a QWERTY, at least make sure it’s worth having, ok? Not to say that this keyboardis absolutely terrible, but it’s one of the worst. Think Sony UX computer, for those of you that have one or have used one. The sliding mechanism comes right ontop of the keys, and thus, the keys don’t travel a lot when pressed. They give little to no feedback despite having a cool triangular design. We’re putting together our review, but in the meantime, you know where the goodies are!

If the idea of a sub-$200 3G touchscreen fashion phone sounds vaguely familiar, trust us, it’s not just your noggin playing tricks on you. Sprint is apparently circulating documentation internally revealing that the Samsung Instinct will run $199.99 on contract after rebates, a move that doesn’t really come as surprise; Sprint itself has worked overtime trying to play up the Instinct versus iPhone angle, after all, and it’s entirely plausible that the carrier was holding out for Apple’s announcement before settling on a price. Sprint will also be requiring that users sign up for an “Everything” plan when taking delivery of their Instinct, a move that smacks of AT&T’s marriage of the iPhone to specific plans. The Instinct gets the jump on Apple’s hardware by a few days thanks to a June 20 launch, so it’ll be interesting to see just how much Cupertino thunder Samsung can steal here.

We aren’t quite sure how long it has been there but the BlackBerry Bold has made its way onto the AT&T web site. Unfortunately, AT&T hasn’t narrowed down a release date beyond later this year. We, however, are prepared to say that we are certain that the AT&T BlackBerry Bold will be released closer to today than to December 31st.

http://www.javoedge.com/reflexeshop/img/products/1/255_3%5B1%5D.5handsfree-2.jpgI had the pleasure of reviewing the JAVOedge iPhone Handsfree Stereo Headset Adapter and it has been a product that I have been wanting to try out for some time.  I have been using this great little accessory for a few weeks and I have to admit that I have been pleasantly surprised by it.

At only $12.95, the handsfree adapter does exactly what it promises.  It allow you to take your existing pair of headphones and plug them into this little adapter creating a customized handsfree experience.  The handsfree adapter has a button (similar to the iPhone stock headset) that allows you to answer/end calls, pause a track, and skip a track by pushing the button twice rapidly.  I found the button on the JAVOedge handsfree adapter to be much nicer and tactile feeling than the stock iPhone headset too.  In terms of call quality, the people on the other line found it to be clear and overall good sounding.  In windy conditions it did not fair well.

For the first week of testing the handsfree adapter, I paired it with the Shure SE210 headset I have.  The reason why is because the SE210 breaks away allowing for a shorter cable to be used in conjunction with such accessories as the JAVOedge handsfree adapter.  This combination proved to be the best of the three I tried.  Throughout the week, my calls were clear sounding (both incoming and my voice outgoing).  The length ended up being just right with this combination.  Shure offers a similar product but at a price tag of $39.99.

For the second week, I paired up the handsfree adapter with my Shure E3C headset.  This headset is much longer and it required the use of a cable spool to shorten the cable significantly.  This proved to be the worst solution as I had an excess amount of heavy gauge cable hanging from my neck.  The sound quality suffered due to the distance the handsfree mic was from my mouth.http://www.javoedge.com/reflexeshop/img/products/1/255_3%5B1%5D.5handsfree-4.jpg

For the last two weeks, I paired up a cheap set of Sennheiser MX300 headphones with the handsfree adapter.  While this wasn’t the ultimate solution, it proved to be my favorite.  The ability to hear background noises along with my current call and the lightweight cable proved to be a winning combination.  While the call quality inbound wasn’t as fantastic as the Shure SE210/handsfree combo, the overall comfort ended up outweighing the quality.  I did end up with an excess amount of cabling but a quick wrap and I was back in business.

Overall, I would have to give the JAVOedge handsfree adapter for the iPhone a score of 6/10.  I would give it a better score if it was bundled automatically with a cable management system at a price point of $15.99.  But, at the current price of $12.95, I cannot deny, this is a great product at a great price.

Yeah, and you thought the current bumper crop of 5-megapixel camera phones was impressive. According to the Unoffical Sony Ericsson Blog, SE is getting ready to unleash this 8.1 megapixel beast on an unsuspecting public. The C905 is a Cybershot camera phone with a pretty impressive “trick” up its sleeve. In addition to the Herculean megapixel count, the new flagship SE Cybershot phone sports GPS, HSDPA, ActiveSync Exchange support, Wi-Fi, an accelerometer, 2.4? QVGA screen, and much more. HTC announces HTC Touch Pro

Wednesday
Jun 4,2008

You might know it as the HTC Raphael, but from now on, it’s official, and officially the Touch Pro. More or a less a slide-out QWERTY version of the HTC Touch Diamond, the Touch Pro improves on some of the Touch Diamond’s specs. Here we’ll find a 1350mAh battery with up to 8 hours of talk time, 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera, GPS, HSDPA 7.2 and HSUPA connectivity. Sadly, it’s not a quad-band EDGE or tri-band UMTS device, with North American versions coming “later in the year.” Hit the jump for the full specs on the Touch Pro and a couple images.

3G iPhone to be thinner

Monday
Jun 2,2008

Rather than bombarding you folks with two successive 3G iPhone rumor posts, I’ll do so in one so as not to piss off the iPhone haters.

First, Leander Kahney at Cult of Mac has a hot tip that the new iPhone will include the following:

3G
GPS
2 x memory (16GB and 32GB)
22 percent thinner
Better battery life

We’ve already suspected all of the above to be true except the 22 percent thinner part.
