How much do we want this thing to just come out already? Far and away the smoothest looking handset to come from Sony Ericsson in a long time, the XPERIA X1 is one of the most highly anticipated mobiles making the net rounds right now. It will be the first of Sony Ericsson’s new high end geek-sheek line and this puppy is packing. A new white paper has just been issued on the Sony Ericsson developer site that adds some details beyond what we’ve already told you. Highlights:
Still no mention of Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional in the 40-page document, but you’ve seen the screenshots. If you’re drooling over the X1 and have the time to flip through the white paper, definitely hit the read link. If not just sit back and try to remain calm while we wait for more details. Hotness.

More details of HTC’s Google phone are emerging, it seems. The handset is to be called “Dream”, will be touchscreen and have a large QWERTY keypad. So, what else do we know? And, more importantly, when is it coming out?
Well, the HTC handset is around five inches long and 3 inches wide with a keypad that either slides or swivels out to make emailing, note-taking and writing Web addresses easy. The Internet is navigated via controls below the screen. So, that’s just like a generic HTC phone, then.
The source of the current leak, described as “a person close to the situation” (ha!) claims that the handset will be available around the end of the year, although HTC is staying schtumm on the matter. “We cannot comment on this product,” their rep said.
HTC will be facing competition from Samsung. The Korean electronics giant is, apparently, wetting its knickers to get its Google phone out before that of HTC.

Yikes! We knew things were bad over at Motorola’s mobile handset division, but this seems to be a bit out of control. The company has just sent notice to all 121 designers at the main Birmingham, England site that they’re poised to reduce staff by 50%, axing roughly 60 jobs over the course of the next 3 months. The text of the actual notice is as follows:
“Since the beginning of 2007 Motorola has been public about its commitment to returning the company’s Mobile Devices business to its market-leading position by improving profitability, driving product portfolio enhancements and rationalising costs.
“As a result it is proposed that the Birmingham site will need to reduce headcount by approximately 50 per cent which may potentially require the closure of the site.
“Therefore, all employees will initially be placed at ‘risk of redundancy’ whilst alternative opportunities including redeployment, relocation, flexible working/home working or the opportunity of a ’service site’ arrangement are investigated as part of the consultation process.”
Right…so, in other words, if you’re a designer at the Birmingham plant, you might want to begin looking for a new job. Quickly. The long term implications of this move for Motorola are unclear at the moment, but it’s certainly a clear indicator of the dire state of the company’s cell phone division.

Remember the black Nokia N82 we showed you the first live images of last month? Remember how hot it looked, despite the blurry pics? Well Nokia finally press released it this morning, making the black stallion official. The N82 is Nokia’s “other” flagship handset and packs all of the features you love about the N95, plus a xenon flash, into a candybar form factor. Nokia is cleverly billing the handset as a storytelling device designed to capture and share journeys and discoveries. A-GPS with integrated track recording, Share Online 3.0 integration for multimedia sharing and a 5 megapixel Zeiss-equipped camera with 30 fps video capture are just a few of the components that indeed make the N82 a perfect device to capture all aspects of life. Nokia’s release states that the black N82 should start shipping within weeks and the price point is set at €400 ($632 today). If you’re game, the MCO shop is showing an estimated arrival date of April 2 and a $599 price point. As for us, we’ll wait for US 3G.

It’s rare that Apple’s patents actually show the exact form factors of devices they have in development, but this “dual sided trackpad” patent for a phone seems to definitely show that they’ve got some flipphone version coming up. The patent itself outlines a phone that has two multitouch sensors, both on the “bottom” part of the phone. When it’s closed, the phone acts like your current model iPhone. When it’s open, only the bottom part of the phone is touch-sensitive, whereas the top part is just a display.

As BlackBerry devices continue to expand beyond the classification of “business devices” that they have been pigeon-holed into in the past, RIM needs to ensure that it finds a balance between innovation and a game of catch up. Simply bringing their devices up to par with the current market won’t have the dramatic impact that users are looking for of course, but RIM certainly needs to cover the basics with their current and future offerings aimed at expansion. Canadian online music distributor Puretracks has used South by Southwest as a forum to announce its role in this process, as they will be launching a new mobile music store next month for BlackBerry devices. Developed in partnership with Magnet Mobile Media, the Puretracks BlackBerry store will initially be available on Pearl, Curve and 8800 series handsets and will utilize the AAC / AAC+ format. Northern BlackBerry owners will be saddened to learn that the service will be available only in the US when it launches in three weeks on April 1, but Puretracks hopes to make its offering available in Canada and other markets soon. The price model hasn’t been announced yet but hopefully it will be on par with the current Puretracks online offering averaging $0.99 per track and $9.99 per album. But how do you download songs? On EDGE? No thanks.

So, yeah…we totally raided the Nokia Store last night in New York! We snatched up a brand new Nokia N95 8GB NAM model, or N95-4 for you hardcore Noke fans, and we gotta’ say it is awesome! Mind you this is our first encounter with the N95 8GB so those of you who have had the European model have experienced this, but combine that bigger screen, redesigned navigation keys, the awesome OS update (which is supposedly coming for the N95-3 soon), US 3G, and you’ve got a real winner! FlashLite 3 is the truth, friends. Only one problem we noticed, and that’s because of the small redesign of the slider and larger screen. It might be hard to explain, but when you slide the screen up, the slider rails are not rounded anymore since they have to make it flush with the larger screen, so the rails are a little sharp and uncomfortable when holding it. Small price to pay for one of the sickest phones this side of the Mississippi, right? Scratch that; $799 + tax is quite a lot to pay. Hit up our gallery for all the goods!
