Even if you’ve never studied textiles, you’ve still probably heard the term mircofiber, but do you know what it means? Let me educated you (here’s where a semester of textiles studies comes in handy): The density of polyester fibers used in fabrics are meausred in deniers, the lower the denier the finer the threads used to make the fabric. This is similar to thread count, which measures cotton fabric density.

What is the ultimate benefit of microfiber? Well, because of its ultra-fineness it is often used in polishing and cleaning glass poducts because it wipes away clean, without the residue that paper towels and even terrycloth linens can leave behind.

JAVOedge has developed this thumb-sized, microfiber “swipe” that can be used to quickly clean the screen of your cell phone, portable gaming device, or… you guessed it, your Sansa mp3 player! I even used it on my eyeglasses with super-clear results. It’s the perfect size for your pocket, purse, desk, it even has a small elastic cord you can loop around headphones or a small notch on your compact devices.

I often wondered where I could buy these (I recieved a similar product with my Motorola Razr a few years ago and loved it until I lost it). Well, I just so happened to learn from a friend that JAVOedge.com sells these things at $5.95 for a four-pack that includes one of each color (black, silver, blue, and white). Four is more than some people need, which is why I just  snagged one.

It can be a pain to keep your Sansa free of fingerprints and hand oils, but this simple little “swipe” takes care of it without wasting paper products and without damaging your mp3 player.

BlackBerry 9000 first impressions

Monday
Mar 31,2008

Waiting for that BlackBerry 9000, are you? The secret BGR phone line just rang, and it was one of RIM ninjas! Here’s what they had to say about the BlackBerry 9000 and the pros and cons of using the device in its current state:

  • Everything we reported was true. 624MHz processor, 480×320 screen, GPS, Wi-Fi, 3G, etc.
  • The web browser flies. “Loads web pages in 3-4 seconds.”
  • The BlackBerry 9000 in its current state runs OS 4.5
  • Early launch date was slated for a consumer AT&T launch on June 18th. Remember that we predicted the device was delayed. See below.
  • The battery lasts around 4 hours with straight phone calling. “Battery sucks, to be honest. With Wi-Fi on, I only got a little less than two hours browsing the web,” and all testers are reporting huge battery issues which could be why we’re all hearing it is delayed.
  • We’re not sure of the next part, but he said that the device either has 256MB of internal memory or 128MB. Don’t ask why we couldn’t tell the difference.

That’s all we got for now!

BlackBerry 9000 in the wild

Friday
Mar 28,2008

Okay, we’ll admit, the first thought on our minds when we saw the BlackBerry 9000 in its natural habitat for the first time was, “that’s it?” RIM’s been taking on increasingly sharp competition as of late — even in its traditional corporate strongholds — and we’d expected and hoped to see something less evolutionary and more revolutionary from these cats. On closer inspection, though, we find that the phone is leaving a very positive second impression. The phone’s lines seem flow really well (dare we call a BlackBerry “sexy”?) without losing its purpose-suited stance exuded by the 8300s, 8700s, and 8800s of yore. The real kicker, though, might be the beautiful user interface, which has been totally revamped from the ground up; gone is the cartoonish look and feel of the current lineup, replaced with a modern, warm theme with wireframe icons and slick animations. Another big win: as Vodafone’s slide deck mentioned, the 9000 features both WiFi and HSDPA, confirmed by this particular example’s info display. Too little, too late — or is this thing a genuine threat in the marketplace this year? Follow the break for a video of the hot new UI in action!

Looking for a hard shell case to protect your Treo? Check out Javoedge’s JAVOShield case, a lightweight anodized aircraft grade aluminum case that not only protects your Treo but also helps complement the overall look with its sleek shiny polished finish.

Here are my observations: I am very impressed with the very polished and shiny look of this JAVOShield case and definitely prefer this finish compared to the brushed matte finish found on other aluminum cases mainly because it feels very smooth to the touch. The case is lightweight which is very nice if you’ve ever carried or used other metal cases that may be heavier and will likely welcome the shedding that extra weight. The door hinge is very solid and snaps securely in. I actually found that it takes a slight bit more of a push to snap the flap in, which can be good or bad, depending on your perspective. As mentioned in previous reviews of similar aluminum cases with a hinged door, I’d suggest finding a way to prevent the inner rod in the door hinge from falling out as it may do so over time. I personally use an elastic band to wrap around the hinge and it worked very well on my Innopocket Deluxe Metal case as I’ve noted in this review.

The transparent plexiglass window is a very nice feature of the case as it protects the delicate Treo screen from accidentally tapped or scratched while inside a bag or pocket.

The neoprene lining found all around the inside of the case does a great job of cushioning the Treo inside the case to absorb mild shocks due to accidental drops, bumps, etc.

Also, as noted in previous reviews, having a book style case, you may find that texting on the Treo may be a bit of a hindrance as the right hand may need to be adjusted to compensate for the door flap getting in the way. It really all depends on how often you text on the Treo with the case and whether you may prefer to remove the Treo when texting. As well, with the case closed, you are limited in accessing various areas of the Treo like the screen, QWERTY keys and will need to open it up before being able to access them. You may need to decide on what’s more important: protection or accessibility.

Scheduled Blackberry Outage Tonight

Friday
Mar 21,2008

Blackberry outages send certain kinds of people into blind, feverish panics, like their arms were cut off, immolated and shoved down a garbage disposal. So that’s why RIM is updating their database in the wee hours of the morning over the weekend—tonight from 2-6AM EST, or more precisely, 6-10AM GMT. Expect no email, internets or roaming during that dark, scary period.

T-Mobile customers here in the US can finally breathe a sigh of relief. See that? That’s the light at the end of the tunnel. You might have already read about the Pearl 8120 hitting shelves on April 14th and that the 8820 will drop as soon as this coming Monday. Did anyone catch the addition of video recording on the 8120 specs though? Mmmm… Software upgrade.

Beleaguered smartphone maker Palm lost $31.5 million this quarter, despite the Centro’s success—no surprise, given that their living-in-the-past handsets are losing marketshare, not to mention the whole deader-than-dead Foleo.
