Garmin releases first Cellphone, Nuviphone

It seems that CrunchGear writers are at a Garmin sponsered event where they have just released images of a new device.. a Cellphone by the name of Nuviphone.

The new Garmin Nuviphone is stated by Crunchgear to have “a touchscreen, 3.5G, GSM phone that’s packed — packed — with features, much of it from Google, like local search, traffic, gMail, gChat, weather, and even Google Panorama. “

It’s mentioned to also be an MP3 player with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. MMS, SMS, and other instant messaging protocols are also included. No word on pricing or who the carrier might be, but it’ll out by Q3 of 2008.

Hands on with TeleNav’s GPS Receiver

When I switched from the Sidekick Slide, I decided to stay with T-Mobile since I’m month-to-month with them rather than jumping to AT&T or Verizon or Sprint. So my BlackBerry Curve is sans GPS, but has Wi-Fi instead. It sort of evens out. Well, in the three weeks that I’ve been away I’ve done some driving and on a few occasions I forgot to bring my Helio Ocean, which meant I was without GPS. Sure, Google Maps is somewhat spot on, but there’s nothing like having GPS when you really need it.

So, I was super happy when I checked into the TC/GC office earlier today and found a bevy of packages waiting for me. It was like Christmas. The smallest package happened to be the coolest one of the bunch and it was Telenav’s GPS receiver. It’s a tiny little guy and has a rubberized back so you can throw it up on the dash of your car and not worry about it sliding around. This, too, will get put through its paces over the next week or so. Stay tuned.

Dell and Google May Make Joint Android/Google Phone

Speculation is mounting that Google is plotting the launch of a mobile phone in partnership with computer giant Dell.  Senior industry sources claim the two companies will reveal their plans at next month’s 3GSM telecoms conference in Barcelona, al-though Google insiders deny an announcement is due in the near future.

But the rumors will once again throw the spotlight on Google’s mobile strategy, which has been the subject of much conjecture over the last year.  There had been widespread talk of Google launching its own handset, known as the “Gphone”, to go up against Apple’s iPhone, which launched in November last year.  But the world’s largest search engine surprised the industry by announcing an operating system for mobile phones called Android. The software makes it easier for developers to create mobile applications that run on many different handsets.

Android, which will be available this year, will bring all of Google’s online services to mobile users.  At present, mobile phones use a variety of operating systems to access the internet, including systems from Microsoft and London-based Symbian.

Marketing Week revealed last year that Dell was also planning a move into mobile phones after poaching Motorola executive Ron Garriques to run its new global consumer group (MW March 1, 2007).

Dell already produces personal digital assistants (PDAs) and strategy analytics director Neil Mawston says: “It makes sense for Dell to have a high-profile entry back into the market because its last effort with PDAs pretty much flopped.”
