BlackBerry 9000 specs revealed

Let’s start this off this by stating there’s more to this device than what will be listed. This is just what’s known at this point, although these details have yet to be confirmed as final specifications. The BlackBerry 9100 will sport a screen with the dimensions of 480 x 320 (or maybe that’s 320 x 480), 1GB of on-board memory, and an Intel XScale PXA270 processor at 624MHz, clocking in slightly faster than the 620MHz ARM 1173 processor found in the iPhone. The BlackBerry 9000 will sport the dual-threat of GPS and WiFi as well as introducing 3G support (multi-band HSDPA) to the GSM carrier family devices, answering the prayers of many of us. At this point in time, there’s no update to the camera, which remains at 2 megapixels, although we’re hearing there is the possibility of seeing a 3.2 megapixel camera at launch. You all know the drill! Rest of the goodies, after the break!

DIY iPhone battery replacement

Are you getting a bit frustrated with your iPhone’s lack of battery life? Feel like it could use a boost from a new juice pack? Do you have nerves of steel? This new kit allows you to replace your iPhone battery without sending the unit in for replacement by Apple. The only catch? You’ll need to get comfortable with a soldering iron, a pair of scissors, and a pry-tool. This is not for the faint of heart. The process requires you to sever the OEM iPhone battery connection and solder the new one to the existing wires. It’s not easy, and the prospect for a completely powerless / bricked iPhone certainly exists, but if you’re successful you’ll find yourself with a fresh 1400 mAh battery. How much does it cost? $25. Any takers?

Microsoft shows next version of Windows Mobile behind closed doors

So we can’t really delve into a lot of specifics, but today Microsoft showed off the next version of Windows Mobile at their annual Mobius conference. Nope, it’s not Windows Mobile 7 / Photon, but what we saw “is an update, not an upgrade”, was running on current hardware, and is due to manufacturers Q108. Our first impressions: very slick, and has a lot of features that just about any WinMo user will agree is way overdue. In other words, we’re expecting users will be stoked — no doubt about it. Expect specific details on features and the like in the near future, we wouldn’t be surprised to hear more about it CES.

Motorola’s new line of multimedia sets to be named Motorola ZiNE?

Color us fairly skeptical friends, but the word from the web is that Moto’s new line of multimedia handsets are going to be dubbed Motorola ZiNE — yeah, we thought the same. We’d heard rumors that new and wildly unoriginal ideas would be rolling out of the labs and design studios at Motorola in the near future and (fingers crossed) hopefully these’ll bring a change of fortune. Apparently the “ZiNE” line will feature a Z10 successor with a big touchscreen, WiFI, and GPS and an 8 megapixel monster with optical zoom purportedly created in conjunction with Kodak. Of course, all of this is fluff and smoke ’til we see the real deal, but know we’ll be posting the dodgy and blurry pics if and when we get our hands on ‘em.

New Google Maps feature could simulate GPS on iPhones

A new version of Google Maps introduced this week includes a beta feature dubbed My Location that was designed to simulate the GPS experience on mobile phones and handheld devices that do not include GPS hardware, like Apple’s iPhone.Essentially, the My Location feature takes information broadcast from mobile towers near non-GPS equipped mobile phones to approximate the device’s current location on the map down to about 10 city blocks.”It’s not GPS, but it comes pretty close (approximately 1000m close, on average),” the Mountain View, Calif.-based search giant explained on its website. “We’re still in beta, but we’re excited to launch this feature and are constantly working to improve our coverage and accuracy.”The My Location feature is currently available for most web-enabled mobile phones, including Java, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Nokia/Symbian devices. However, it is not yet compatible with Apple’s iPhone.

Still, Apple has promised to continuously update and improve upon the feature set of its inaugural mobile handset, making it more than likely that the feature will turn up once it emerges from the beta stage.

For a more detailed explanation of My Location and a visual demonstration, please see the video below.

LG Shine surpasses the 5 million mark, now available on AT&T

LG’s Shine has just landed on American soil (at least in fully-subsidized carrier-branded form), but the product line has been enjoying significant success on the international scene. LG announced that over 5 million Shines have been sold since the handset’s October 2006 debut. That’s a lot of phones, people! It’s easy to get worked up about 1 million iPhones here, and another million HTC Touch’s there, but 5 million handsets in just over a year is no joke. Congrats, LG. The better news, at least for those of us here in the US, is that AT&T is now pushing their very own HSDPA-capable Shine. Life’s Good, right? Right.

Treo 755p Teaser Page at Verizon

Last month Alltel started carrying the Treo 755p in a charcoal color. Also, we heard rumors last month that Verizon would have the Palm Treo 755p, and then a little later, Verizon officially announced they’d be getting the 755p in November.

Verizon has posted a teaser page on their site now saying that the Treo 755p will be coming soon. From the pictures, the Verizon 755p looks to be teal green color. Now that’s different! I always enjoy seeing color variations in Palm’s smartphones.

The teaser page doesn’t say when Verizon will start carrying the 755p. You can sign up for updates though. The Treo 755p threads over at the TreoCentral forums have posts from members duscussing the rumored release dates.

Treo Verizon 700wx smartphone Audio Patch

Palm has released a new audio patch for the Treo 700w & 700wx smartphones on Verizon.  While on a call, the Treo 700w|wx will dim or shut off the touchscreen after a period of time. The device will “wake up” to address the 2nd call or voicemail notification, however, when returning to the dimmed state, the device may incorrectly enter a suspend mode. This mode disables the speaker and microphone.  This update will solve this issue, follow the jump for download and install instructions.

Microsoft Zune 80 has sub-par battery life

…and the world breathes a sigh of despair. Were you looking to scoop up a couple of Microsoft Zune 80s for your nephews, nieces, and gardner’s during the holiday season? If battery life is important to you, then you might want to think twice. CNET has just published the results of their recent battery tests, and the Zune 80 isn’t looking too good in the face of some stiff competition. According to CNET, the Zune 80 was only able to swing 22 hours of  audio playback without Wi-Fi enabled. Turn on that wireless function and you’re looking at roughly 18.5 hours of playback. That’s great, but the 80GB version of the new iPod Classic was able to play for a staggering 45 hours before calling it quits. To be fair, the Zune does have a significantly larger screen than the iPod Classic, but is it worth a runtime that’s half as good?

Hands-on with Sprint’s HTC Touch

We’ll admit, when we caught wind that there was a CDMA version of HTC’s stylish Touch in the pipe, we were skeptical that it’d be a faithful reproduction. We can’t even really put our finger on why, either; we just somehow assume (unfairly so, may we add) that when you take a GSM device and shove it through the CDMA transmogrifier, the phone that comes out the other end is going to be a little thicker, a little less attractive, a little slower, a little harder to use, or some combination of the above. We’re delighted to report, though, that the fears are utterly unfounded with this little gem. In fact, if it weren’t for the silkscreened Sprint logo front and center, we wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. The similarities carry through to the UI, where the TouchFLO-driven interface gets an ever-so-mild Sprint makeover to add in support for Sprint TV (also, notice how all the icons have a Sprint Yellow hue — cute). The thing about TouchFLO is that the finger friendliness doesn’t go far beyond the home page — all the standard Windows Mobile apps are here and are designed with a stylus in mind — and while the stylus is there on the Touch if you need it, we were pleasantly surprised with how accurately we were able to navigate using one hand and a thumb alone. Bottom line: if you liked the original Touch, you’ll like Sprint’s version, and the addition of 3G certainly doesn’t hurt.
