Don’t worry BlackJack fans, Samsung does indeed seem to have a true BlackJack II successor in the works for you, unlike that stylus-based i780 pretender to the throne. Turns out the i617 — which we saw pass the FCC yesterday — will be doing the honors, but unfortunately it’s not terribly clear what those honors will be. AT&T is a lock, thanks to the HSDPA 850 / 1900, and of course Windows Mobile 6 will be the main attraction, but there’s no confirmation of WiFi or any other notable hardware upgrades just yet other than a bump to 2 megapixels from the original’s 1.3. As for looks, we’ll let you make up your own mind, but the design isn’t much of a departure — there’s still a back hump — but everything is considerably more shiny this time around. No word on price or availability. There’s a shot of the back after the break.

Apple has obviously made some enemies over this whole bricked iPhone situation, and clearly not everyone wants to follow the straight-and-narrow when it comes to the company’s factory-limited and locked device. Now, at least one California resident named Timothy Smith has decided to bring the fight to the Cupertino monolith’s doorstep — and he showed up with lawyers. According to papers filed last week, the angry iPhone owner is suing Apple in hopes of barring the company from selling locked phones, and forcing the Mac-maker to provide warranty service for customers even if they’ve bricked their phones via third-party software. The suit claims that, “Apple forced plaintiff and the class members to pay substantially more for the iPhone and cell phone service than they would have paid in a competitive marketplace either for the iPhone or for AT&T’s cell phone service,” and that the company, “Acted in defiance and without sufficient consideration of consumers’ rights to unlock their iPhones because it knew that the probable result of its update would be to render unlocked iPhones inoperable.” The lawyers in the case have set up a website where owners can join in on the suit — so if you’re feeling slighted, maybe they can help.

In the world of mobile email, it’s hard to compete with RIM and the plethora of BlackBerry devices it has to offer. With BlackBerry’s latest smartphone for T-Mobile, the Curve 8320, the companies hope to capitalize by taking advantage of RIM’s infrastructure, T-Mobile’s wireless calling plans, and the undeniable benefit of adding a little WiFi into the mix. Does the device live up to the hype? Did RIM make a mistake when it outfitted the Curve with a small processor and WiFi? Continue reading on to find out.

As if anyone expected it to stay locked down forever, the layers of security surrounding v1.1.1 of the iPhone firmware are being peeled away. TUAW’s Erica Sadun managed to get read / write access to the phone’s directories during her liveblogging session, and the hackint0sh forums are abuzz about a new hacking method that uses buffer overflow via “carefully crafted” TIFFs that crash Mobile Safari. Neither of the new hacks approach the relative ease of use that we’d seen pre-v1.1.1, but it’s still early days yet. Apple, throw us a bone here, will ya?

There’s good news, and there’s bad news, and we’ll be hitting the latter first. Days ago, reports flooded the net claiming that an Office Mobile upgrade that would allow viewing / editing of Word, Excel and PowerPoint files created in Office 2007 was available. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a mistimed leak, so we’re back to testing our patience for now. On the bright side, we do have a good indication of what this free upgrade (for Office Mobile 6.0 users) will bring, which reportedly also enables users to “view and extract files from compressed .zip folders.” So just hold tight, the update should be flowing out for real “within the next two weeks.”

The day has finally come, friends. All the rumors, speculation, unboxings, and other hints on a release date have all been put to silence…Officially announced now and available in stores tomorrow (Friday, the 5th, though we’ve heard reports of some stores getting stock already) — the AT&T Tilt is sure to mess up the game! We got to experience the HTC TyTN II, known as the HTC Kaiser back then, and we had a glowing review based on our hands-on sessions. The great part, in our opinion, after using the AT&T Tilt, is that besides removing the front-facing camera, they have not locked the device down — GPS is not disabled, and to be honest, we kind of dig the AT&T customizations. These are little things like MP3-playing controls on the home screen, organized icons in folders, BlackBerry Connect, TeleNav, all chrome buttons, Push-to-talk, and others. All in all, you put a super Windows Mobile device with HSDPA, a 400MHz processor, 3 megapixel auto-focus camera, tilting screen, and full QWERTY keyboard on AT&T, and you’ve got something really solid in our opinion. Also, the AT&T Tilt has HSUPA; remember that when the rumored network upgrade happens in the next few months…Click on for the full press release and head on over to our hands-on gallery below!

Bringing all of the HTC Kaiser’s joy to AT&T, the Tilt has finally been set for an October 5 launch. Besides the obvious feature of a tilting display — hence the name — the spec sheet reveals a 3 megapixel autofocus camera, HSDPA, stereo Bluetooth, Windows Mobile 6 Professional (the first AT&T device to officially rock it — can ya believe it?), microSDHC slot for cards up to 32GB, an integrated GPS receiver, and BlackBerry Connect support. Last time we checked, that pretty much covers the “superphone” checklist. Grab it starting Friday for $299.99 on contract after the full suite of rebates has been applied. Follow the break for a bonus shot of the Tilt in its upright and locked position!
