In a patent filed this July, Microsoft wanted to stake their claim to a new interface for use on a touchscreen in a mobile device. The patent, entitled “Extensible filtered lists for mobile device user interface” looks kind of familiar… where have I seen it before? Oh, right. It’s the iPhone’s exact interface.

As you well know, Motorola’s RAZR 2 V8 isn’t slated to land on T-Mobile until October 15th, but how’s about a few looks to keep you antsy over the weekend? Thanks to a tipster who managed to get his hands around one of the T-Mobile-branded handsets, we’re now getting our first looks at the device. So without further ado, why not check out the gallery below to see what the fuss is all about?

Apple Web Apps directory goes live

Thursday
Oct 11,2007

After a long week of waiting and anticipation, Apple’s Web Application directory has finally gone live. You can find the list of stuff over at apple.com/webapps. There’s a healthy list of stuff right here, with applications listed by category, date added, and popularity, much like Apple’s directory of third party OS X applications. There’s also a space for a “featured application”, which is followed by a list of “staff picks.” The list is not exhaustive by any means, but does provide a nice compiled arrangement of some of the more popular apps out there, a list that is sure to grow as developers continue to jump on the “Web App” bandwagon. There’s a button on the homepage for App submission, though again we’re not sure on the specifics of the submission or approval process. Hit the link and get your web app one, iPhoners.

For you Walkman / Cyber-shot buffs out there who’ve been dying to get your hands on some new phoneage — look no further. The Sony-Ericsson dreamteam have just announced the official release of two of its new mobile phones sure to have player haters… um, player hating. The W910, which we took a look at back in June, apparently has music-playin’ on its mind, though with HSDPA, a 1GB Memory Stick, and its “shake” feature (which allows you to jostle the device to switch songs or randomize playback), you might find other uses for it. If you’re more of an Ansel Adams-type, you can get your mitts on the K850, a camera-minded phone that’s got a considerable 5-megapixel camera (with a Xenon flash / video light), has more of that beloved HSDPA, and can do 30fps video — if that’s your thing. Both of these sweet babies will be available in “selected markets” this month, no word on price.

So, what do you expect to happen now that a pair of jailbreak solutions are out? Why, a 1.1.1 unlock for baseband version 04.01.13_G of course. The “world’s first” 1.1.1 unlock comes courtesy of the for-profit iPhoneSimFree team after a tithe to the usual service providers. For their customers who by chance bricked their iPhones by updating to 1.1.1 in haste, IPSF is making their SimFree v1.6 wares freely available to unbrick your $599 coaster. Just hit the read link for all the details.

Yeah, yeah, you should know by know…we don’t plays arounds! Our last bit of T-Mobile info informed us we’d be seeing the Motorola RAZR 2 V8 peek out on October 15th, and we’ve received additional confirmation this still holds true. The quick difference between the other carrier versions and T-Mobile’s, is that their V8 is the smallest of the bunch, but is also the only one to not sport a memory expansion card. To make up for this, it rocks 2GB of internal memory (thankfully T-Mobz went for that one instead of the 512MB version). Another quick difference is that it runs Motorola’s Linux-based OS — a big draw for some people. They’re actively pushing their cellphone crack to potential buyers aged 18-30, and mention their customers “will love having an innovative device that builds on the original RAZR’s iconic design because they see their phone as a status symbol.” A little shallow and direct? Sure. But we still say you can’t go wrong with a Moto V8! Head on over to Engadget Mobile for the full run down!

Move over, Opera. Mozilla’s VP of Engineerring, Mike Schroepfer, has declared that Mozilla plans to finally jump into mobile web and “rock it,” as specs on mobile devices are finally hitting where they need to be for a “no compromise” browsing experience. Specifically, they’re announcing that

•Mozilla will add mobile devices to the first class/tier-1 platform set for Mozilla2. This means we will make core platform decisions with mobile devices as first-class citizens.
•We will ship a version of “Mobile Firefox” which can, among other things, run Firefox extensions on mobile devices and allow others to build rich applications via XUL.

On track for a late October launch? Sure looks like it. We’ve caught wind that retail locations are starting to stock up on Pantech Duo dummies, suggesting that they’ll be prepping for launch any day now. Between this, the Q9 Global, the Blackjack II, the Tilt, and the 5700, it looks like anyone complaining about a lack of Windows Mobile devices on AT&T by the end of the year… well, needs to find a real issue.
