Don’t get too excited — you can’t order it just yet — but AT&T’s at least ready to admit that the Samsung BlackJack2 exists. It seems the carrier’s pulling the same stunt it did with the Q9 Global, taking email addresses for notification of availability without giving any indication as to when it might be available. Compared to the original, the keyboard and d-pad both look considerably hotter, Windows Mobile 6 comes installed (just imagine the horror if it wasn’t!), “faster 3G speeds” are being touted, and perhaps most importantly, GPS capability is integrated. Oh yeah, there’s some Video Share action in there too, but we’re not too sure we’d call that a “feature.” When it’s launched, look for it in “wine red” and black.

It seems our friends up north decided to get a little busy in recent weeks, registering a number of new domains in mid-October. It looks as if Research In Motion intend to keep their naming conventions in line with the 8000 series family – at least for now. Although we’re sure we missed a few, here goes nothing.

Earlier this year, RIM agressively acquired blackberry9100.com and blackberry9900.com from private holdings to mark their future product brands, leading many (including yours truly) to believe these to be the launch families for the 9000 series. It now appears the BlackBerry 9300 series will join the ranks and pick up the next generation footsteps of the Curve family, as well.

We will start this article off by stating this is subject to change prior to public release, however, here’s your first look at BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.3! We’ve not yet fully uncovered what it’s capable of, although we from first impressions, it doesn’t look like much more than a visual upgrade of the initial application view, as well as an updated version of Intellisync. Also bundled with this version of BlackBerry Desktop Manager is an update to Roxio Media Manager, now sporting some advanced encoding options and enhanced support for other video formats.

No word on a release date, but with the BlackBerry 8120 being recently launched with OS 4.3.0, we’d have to think that BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.3 will follow at some point soon thereafter. Then again, we have yet to hear about the BlackBerry 8120 actually being available from any of the pre-launch and launch carriers in Europe (Telefonica/Spain, TIM/Italy and O2/UK), so who knows.

Rest of the shots, after the break!

The new Sony Ericsson W890i we saw late last month is getting a bit more fleshed out as the weeks trickle by. If you believe the spec sheet, it’ll be available in maroon as well as the black pictured above, comes packing quad-band GSM, UMTS, and, wait for it, HSDPA at 850 MHz. How can this be? A Sony Ericsson handset with HSDPA that’ll work on AT&T in the US and Rogers Wireless in Canada is a like a cellular dream come true. Sadly, internal memory disappoints at only 40 MB, though it can be bolstered by shelling out for some Memory Stick Micro (M2). Not much else new can be gleaned but we’re hoping for pricing and a launch date soon.

The Steve has listened to our incessant whining and now he’s writing something I’ve been waiting to read for many months: “Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February.” That’s the lead-in from his letter on Apple.com saying the third-party app SDK for native iPhone programs is coming in early ‘08. It’ll also do iPod touch programs. Jobs also explains the delay: Making the iPhone more open while keeping it secure from viruses has been a challenge. They’re taking their time, and doing it right. Arn from Macrumors points out that the piece includes hints that Apple might pick up a digital signature system for app verification. P.S. Kudos for Businessweek on scooping this ahead of time, but Fake Steve called it first, bluffing or not. P.P.S We’ll really have to wait awhile to find out the exact details of app development to fully celebrate, but right now, I gotta admit, I feel like a born-again fanboy. [Apple. BTW, that Digg badge links to the apple.com website, so keep it floating.]

Is it safe yet to declare that carriers are looking at finger-friendly touchscreens as The Next Big Thing in wireless? Sprint today has officially announced its HTC Touch, a device codenamed “Vogue” that brings all of the original’s unique personality to the world of CDMA (and, thankfully, EV-DO). Besides the touted support for 3G data, features include a 2 megapixel cam, microSD slot with support for up to 4GB of expansion, Windows Mobile 6 Professional with HTC’s TouchFLO interface, and comprehensive support for Sprint’s media features including Sprint TV and the Sprint Music Store, all packed into a shell measuring 4 x 2.4 x 0.6 inches and weighing in at 4 ounces (trust us, it looks and feels pretty flippin’ small). Interested parties don’t have terribly long to wait, either — look for it to start showing up in retail channels November 4 for a penny under $250 on contract with rebates.

BlackBerry Curve 8310 Unboxing!

Monday
Oct 15,2007

It seems it was just a couple days ago that we were making predictions on the BlackBerry Curve series and what sort of features it would sport. Would it have GPS? Would it have Wi-Fi? Would it have GPS and Wi-Fi? By now, we know the answers, but nevertheless, there have been a ton of people annoyed at the fact that they left GPS behind when they switched from the BlackBerry 8800 to the BlackBerry Curve. While not officially available from AT&T yet, the BlackBerry Curve 8310 has started showing up in stores across the country. The launch date looks like tomorrow October 16th, so get ready. In the meantime, check out our photos of the Crimson-colored device!

Sony Ericsson K850i Unboxing!

Monday
Oct 15,2007

Got a little bit of competition there, Nokia? We’d say so! Sony Ericsson, long know for pooping on us America consumers with non-850MHz phones has finally turned a corner. The Sony Ericsson K850i doesn’t just come quad-band — we’re talking tri-band UMTS/HSDPA action also! Such a glorious day. A 5 megapixel CyberShot camera graces the handset, as do countless other features and upgrades over previous S.E. products. We’re loving this device, too. The camera lens opens automatically like a real camera on the back, the keypad is a pleasure to use and is highly responsive. We’re zipping away at HSDPA speeds right now, so we’d say all systems are a “go!” If there was ever a time to do a battle, it would be between the Nokia N95, and the Sony Ericsson K850i. Right, Chris? Check out our shots below!

One touch iPod Touch Jailbreak

Monday
Oct 15,2007

It was only a matter of time before we had a full scale iPod Touch Jailbreak, and thankfully the day of reckoning is upon us. iJailBreak is a slick little GUI that frees the overbearing shackles of Apple’s lockdown, and opens the platform up to a multitude of third party applications. The real rub here, though, is that iJailBreak was apparently written by a 13-year old kid by the name of AriX. Crazy, right? We’re quite certain that Apple will do their best to shut this down much like they’ve done with the iPhone Jailbreak process in the past, but for anyone with an iPod Touch running the most current firmware version, today is your lucky day.

It looks like Sony Ericsson may be taking a slightly more high-road approach to its first 3G handsets for North America than Nokia did with the N95, pairing up with AT&T all official-like for the Z750a and K850a. This inventory sheet, apparently off of an AT&T system, indicates as much — and yes, we realize it’s totally Photoshoppable, but the Z750 and K850 both seem like obvious additions for the carrier, don’t they? Sony Ericsson could try to sell the phones directly through SonyStyle as it does with other models, but you figure that if they’re going to put the effort into finally adding North American 3G, they’re going to try to go big by launching it in AT&T stores. With a 5 megapixel camera on the K850, who’s complaining?
