Apple Web Apps directory goes live

After a long week of waiting and anticipation, Apple’s Web Application directory has finally gone live. You can find the list of stuff over at apple.com/webapps. There’s a healthy list of stuff right here, with applications listed by category, date added, and popularity, much like Apple’s directory of third party OS X applications. There’s also a space for a “featured application”, which is followed by a list of “staff picks.” The list is not exhaustive by any means, but does provide a nice compiled arrangement of some of the more popular apps out there, a list that is sure to grow as developers continue to jump on the “Web App” bandwagon. There’s a button on the homepage for App submission, though again we’re not sure on the specifics of the submission or approval process. Hit the link and get your web app one, iPhoners.

iPod touch now running Mail and more

We’re not looking at general availability yet, but those happy hacking cats unravelling the iPod touch have decrypted the ramdisk and are now busy installing applications. Already, Mail, Maps, and other 3rd party apps are up and running on their jailbreaked touches. The race is on between the cat and the mouse to see who will release their wares first. Maps screenshot after the break.

iPhoneSIMFree Releases First 1.1.1 SIM Unlock - The iPhone Is Free Again!

PhoneSIMFree, the company that released the first GUI iPhone SIM unlock, has just provided an updated version of their SimFree unlocker for iPhone 1.1.1 phones. According to them, they can apply their unlock thanks to the iPhone Dev Team’s 1.1.1 Jailbreak. Their new software will work with virgin, never-unlocked iPhones with firmware 1.1.1 and bricked iPhones too. If that’s you, head over to their page for a step-by-step tutorial. This is just for IPSF unlocks, so people who unlocked with anySIM or iUnlock will have to wait; though hopefully not very much longer.

(UPDATE: Actually, they claim that their new application also restores the baseband of your iPhone if you used any of the free unlocks. The result: a bricked iPhone can now be fully brought to life and unlocked with their paid solution. People who already unlocked the iPhone with iPSF just need to jailbreak their iPhones and activate because, according to them: “there’s no need to re-apply the unlock because the unlock survives the firmware upgrade. It’s permanent.” - Jesús Díaz)

Sony Ericsson gets official on the W910 and K850

For you Walkman / Cyber-shot buffs out there who’ve been dying to get your hands on some new phoneage — look no further. The Sony-Ericsson dreamteam have just announced the official release of two of its new mobile phones sure to have player haters… um, player hating. The W910, which we took a look at back in June, apparently has music-playin’ on its mind, though with HSDPA, a 1GB Memory Stick, and its “shake” feature (which allows you to jostle the device to switch songs or randomize playback), you might find other uses for it. If you’re more of an Ansel Adams-type, you can get your mitts on the K850, a camera-minded phone that’s got a considerable 5-megapixel camera (with a Xenon flash / video light), has more of that beloved HSDPA, and can do 30fps video — if that’s your thing. Both of these sweet babies will be available in “selected markets” this month, no word on price.

Motorola RAZR 2 V8 on T-Mobile a go for October 15th!

Yeah, yeah, you should know by know…we don’t plays arounds! Our last bit of T-Mobile info informed us we’d be seeing the Motorola RAZR 2 V8 peek out on October 15th, and we’ve received additional confirmation this still holds true. The quick difference between the other carrier versions and T-Mobile’s, is that their V8 is the smallest of the bunch, but is also the only one to not sport a memory expansion card. To make up for this, it rocks 2GB of internal memory (thankfully T-Mobz went for that one instead of the 512MB version). Another quick difference is that it runs Motorola’s Linux-based OS — a big draw for some people. They’re actively pushing their cellphone crack to potential buyers aged 18-30, and mention their customers “will love having an innovative device that builds on the original RAZR’s iconic design because they see their phone as a status symbol.” A little shallow and direct? Sure. But we still say you can’t go wrong with a Moto V8! Head on over to Engadget Mobile for the full run down!
