Engadget: Control your iPod with your Timex

Chalk another one up to the rumor mill, as it looks like the leaked PowerPoint slide we saw just last month was indeed referring to an actual product. Thanks to an FCC filing, we now know that Timex is actually cranking out a Made for iPod timepiece in its Ironman series. The i-Control isn’t the most handsome of watches, but it will be available in a water-resistant casing, sport Indiglo backlighting, and play nice with your dock connecting iPod. According to the documentation, users will clip an included RF transmitter into their Pod, which will allow the watch to control the volume, track, and play / pause function so long as the it’s within “about ten feet” of your wrist. Of course, it still sports the same alarm, chrono, recall, and interval timer modes as the rest of its siblings, but unfortunately, it doesn’t look like you’ll see any scrolling track tags on this one. As expected, there’s no word on price just yet, but click on through for a more detailed shot of it all sprawled out.

Nokia N800 Version 2 to Feature Retractable QWERTY Keyboard

Even though the Nokia N800 received a rather major upgrade recently, that hasn’t stopped the Finnish developer from working on the handheld’s successor. What you see before is the rumored follow-up to the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet. As I’m sure you can see, this time around they’ve included a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, clearly responding to the feedback Nokia received on the first N800.

With the keyboard the way it is, the next-gen Nokia N800 — whatever they’re going to call it (N801?) — bears a striking resemblance to the several Pocket PC devices created by the team at HTC, except that the new Nokia will be quite a bit bigger than a regular Pocket PC phone.

The super shiny, almost chrome or stainless steel-like finish is also very attractive. We’ll have to stay tuned and keep our eyes peeled for any details as they arise. I’d imagine that Nokia has quite a bit in store for us.

iPhone in depth: the Ars Technica review

Some think that the hype surrounding the Apple iPhone started in January of 2007, but that’s not true. The hype started many years ago, perhaps before creating such a device was even a twinkle in Steve Jobs’ eye. After so many years of rumors about the mythical iPhone, so many fake (or scrapped?) mockups, so many fake (or scrapped) names, and a brief experiment with the now-failed Motorola ROKR, Apple finally went ahead and launched the device that Apple fans have been craving since the beginning of time—or at least since Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997 and killed off the Newton.

And of course, to do something simultaneously predictable and shocking, the company called the device by its long-rumored, but never-quite-accepted nickname, the “iPhone.”

The iPhone is now out and promises to revolutionize the way we use our phones forever. You don’t have to love it; you don’t even have to like it. You will, however, be witness to a great upheaval in the mobile communications business because of it.

Steve Jobs recently declared during an internal company meeting that he believes all phones will, some day, work the same way as the iPhone and that those who worked at Apple during the iPhone launch will be able to tell their grandchildren about it. It appears as if Jobs truly believes in this product as a long-term revolutionary device, even if he does acknowledge that it does come with various flaws today.
