Unlocked iPhones A Reality Through Pure Digital?

Unlocked iPhones are going to be a major commodity once the iPhone finally gets released. Although no one is exactly sure of the “SIM card situation” (whether you will be able to change one out), everyone seems to be optimistic that there will still be some way to do so.

That’s why when pro blogger and PodTech VP Robert Scoble pointed out that Pure Mobile is prepping to resell unlocked versions of the iPhone, my interest was piqued. The company claims on its iPhone web page that it will sell both 4GB and 8GB versions of the phone that will not be restricted to AT&T/Cingular; this would make the phones compatible with most major GSM carriers in North America, such as T-Mobile, Fido, and Rogers.

Pricing for the unlocked phones is, predictably, not available right now. However, we can reasonably expect that the phones will most likely go for a premium. The company told Scoble that they expect not to be able to meet demand upon the iPhone’s launch, because demand is currently “off the scale” compared to any other product they’ve dealt with yet. The only prices currently listed on the site are shipping rates ($29 and $19 for Priority and Economy shipping, respectively).

If Pure Mobile is truly selling unlocked iPhones, then I can see a great many users being interested in buying one through them, including me. Of course, features like visual voicemail won’t be compatible with most other carriers, but just the freedom to be able to use it outside of AT&T will be good enough for most of us. We’ll see soon enough whether the company is actually successful at doing what we all are hoping they can do.

HTC S720 Arrives at Telus

Canadian network Telus now brings HTC S720 smartphone, a highly evolved device. With this, they offer the reliable services coming from HTC products under a high cost, which might be worth it in the end.

This smartphone comes with few changes from the HTC S710/Vox
phone model. The main one is that HTC S720 is actually a CDMA handset and has slight differences in hardware and software.

The fact that it comes with Windows Mobile 6 installed makes it one of the most highly evolved mobile devices. Even more, it is worth mentioning that we are actually talking about the first cellular in Canada to work on this operating system.

One very practical aspect about HTC S720 is that it comes with two keyboards. It has a fast access 12 key numeric pad and also reveals a QWERTY one when it slides. This makes the phone highly reliable and offers easy access to any of its functions and also allows the quick editing of word files when needed.

Moreover, it proves to be quite small and easy to handle, at its 103.5 x 51 x 19.2 mm dimensions. This makes it a highly compact computer, as it is capable of providing its user the possibility of continuing his work any place, at all times. HTC S720 comes with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents support.

This smartphone can also be used as a modem in order to provide laptop Internet access through a USB modem. Basic internet services are provided through this handset too, as it is capable of handling email, instant messaging and web browsing.

HTC S720 is available through Canadian network Telus for the price of USD 150. Still, this comes with a three year contract, which will considerably increase the price that people have to spend on it in time. In order to break free of these constrains, HTC S720 is also available with no contract, for the price of USD500.
