Dell to start selling smart phones

Remember when Dell dropped the Axim PDA and the world yawned like a slutty hippopotamus? Well, it looks like it was because even Dell knew that PDAs were out and smartphones (PDAs with calling capabilities) are in. They’ve contracted Quanta Computer—which incidentally supplies Dell’s laptops as well—to build them a smartphone for launch in Q4 2007. There aren’t many details to be found, but “sources” claim that it’s codenamed “Fly” and will have Windows Mobile 6, HSDPA, and possibly a QWERTY. Since we’re loath to use a smartphone that doesn’t have a keyboard, we hope that last part’s true. In a market dominated by HTC, we’ll just have to see what Dell needs to do to bring something new to the table.

Rural Arkansas school turns school buses into classrooms

A rural Arkansas school district hopes to turn school buses into classrooms by providing students with iPods and laptops. Unlike Michigan’s dubious one iPod per child program, Arkansas’s Aspirnaut Initiative is highly targeted and has a clearly defined set of goals. The Sheridan school district in Arkansas is using technology to add academic value to the three-hour commute endured daily by students from neighboring rural communities. Originally conceived by Vanderbilt University biochemist Bill Hudson, Arkansas’s Aspirnaut Initiative brings laptops, iPods, and wireless Internet to school buses in an effort to promote science education.

Apple seriously considering $50-$150 iPhone rebate w/ service contract

Several recent developments on Apple’s iPhone strategy have compelled one analyst to raise his estimates and price target on shares of the company, such as word that the iPod maker is seriously considering a move to subsidize the cost of the handset through rebates or other means. In an in-depth research note released to clients on Tuesday, American Technology analyst Shaw Wu cited sources who indicate that a mail-in rebate or carrier subsidy for iPhone of $50-150 is under serious consideration by the Cupertino-based electronics firm.
