Nokia N75 finally launches for Cingular/ATT !!

Hard to believe the day’s finally come, but that thing you’re looking at is actually Nokia’s long, long, freaking long-delayed N75 3G Symbian smartphone. Here. As in, here in America, on AT&T. You don’t really need us to tell you what it is (ok, well, if you do: it’s got a 2 megapixel camera, PlaysForSure support, Bluetooth, and plenty of media and messaging apps), but you’ll be stoked to learn the media-centric flip will run you just $200 (with rebate and 2-year). Grats, AT&T, we were starting to think you didn’t have it in you to launch a friggin 3G Symbian phone.

Cingular’s smartphone sales tanking ahead of iPhone

Cingular retail stores are already experiencing a slow down in sales of their high-end handsets ahead of iPhone, according to investment research firm PiperJaffray, which on Thursday raised its price target on shares of Apple to a new high of $140.

“We believe that the iPhone will benefit from this pent-up demand,” analyst Gene Munster told Apple investors after conferring with fellow analyst Mike Walkley, who covers the mobile space for PiperJaffray.

Munster’s checks reveal a robust market for high-end handsets in the above-$300 range. For instance, he said Nokia’s N95 model is selling extremely well in Europe for €450 (over $600 US), where Apple remains on track to launch iPhone later this year.

iPhone will be the best business phone

Microsoft has suggested that Apple’s coming iPhone will be irrelevant for business users. In fact, just the opposite is the case, according to Alykhan Jetha, CEO of Marketcircle.

The key to Microsoft’s FUD campaign is focusing on the enterprise, large companies that fold the smartphone into their business practices, such as e-mail connected to an Exchange server, spreadsheet applications, and custom apps.

In reality, there is a whole sector of business, small to medium sized businesses, that don’t require this infrastructure and will benefit greatly from the iPhone.

“If you are in business, you need to adopt things that have a short learning curve (we learn this lesson everyday), because you just don’t have much time to learn stuff. The beauty of the iPhone is that is presents to you just the interface you need when you need it. And because the interface is dynamic, the iPhone can take up the whole screen when you are doing that one thing,” Mr. Jetha wrote in his Blog.

What those overworked, preoccupied small businessmen really need is an easy to use phone that has the key components for their daily work. TMO spoke with Mr. Jetha who pointed out that, “small business users aren’t interested in custom business applications. What they need is Web access, e-mail, a calendar, and contacts, all integrated as part of their daily workflow. And the iPhone has a terrific Web Browser in Safari.”

Those are the tasks that independent businessmen on the run really need, and the iPhone makes them accessible and easy to learn. That’s the key issue that other analysts are overlooking. Corporations may roll out a mobile phone system and support it with approved mobile phones, even supply training. But for people who want to get down to business quickly, the iPhone will have great appeal.

This is just the side benefit of a phone that appeals to the masses. “…the enterprise market is not one of Apple’s core strengths, but the small business market is a different story. And we all know that there are more consumers and small business users than there are enterprise users,” he wrote.

Finally, Mr. Jetha pointed out that the iPhone will be a great tool for small businessmen “because they want to use it, instead of being forced to use it.”

That Apple insight may be, in fact, what has Microsoft so worried that they’ve developed a FUD campaign designed to deflect the issue over to their turf. There’s just never any joy in FUDville.

New Japanese Mobile Phones Detect Motion

TOKYO (AP) — Some of the latest mobile phones in Japan come with motion sensors that let users detect motion or play action games like those on the Nintendo Wii console.

The D904i from NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s top mobile carrier, contains a tiny motion sensor that detects shaking and tilting, company spokesman Nobuyuki Hatanaka said.

Instead of punching a keypad, users can move the handset like a tennis racket or fishing pole in easy-to-play games, similar to those on Nintendo Co.’s popular Wii.

In the “Tokyo Highway Battle” racing game, users twist the handset like a steering wheel to control driving. In “Skateboard Dash,” the phone can be tilted to control the board’s speed and direction.

Meanwhile, two new phones from Sharp Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial use their built-in cameras to detect motion. Users can control a hip-hop dancer by wagging a finger in front of the camera, for example, or throw punches in the air for a boxing match.

DoCoMo warns users not to go overboard with the handsets, however.

“If you swing or swerve too hard, it’ll be hard to keep your eyes on the screen, and you might bother those around you,” Hatanaka said. “We’re talking about somewhat subtler motions.”

Downloading games to play on the go is popular in Japan, where most mobile phone users are signed up for third-generation networks that offer fast data communication. Users download games onto their handsets to play for a set monthly fee.

The new phones are expected to hit Japanese stores in May. There are no current plans for overseas sales.

The George Foreman iGrill

There are so many reasons to love George Foreman. The monumental title fight against Joe Frazier in 1973, the insane comeback that lasted into his ’40s, and the fact that he’s named all five of his sons George. But the thing we appreciate most? He loves to eat. And he’s made beaucoup bucks doing it.

It’s been reported that more George Foreman Grills have been sold than any other household appliance ever–more than 55 million, to be inexact. Never content to rest on his considerable laurels, however, Foreman is updating the “Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine” (trademarked) for the digital age with–get this–the “George Foreman iGrill.

In addition to its 200-square-inch nonstick cooking surface, Uncrate says, the $150 electric grill hooks up to your iPod and has a built-in 10-watt speaker system. Who knew that MP3 grills would be the hottest summer trend?

Amosu 24 Carat Golden iPod :: It’s About Time!

iPod skins and laser etching are so bourgeois. If you are down with the Gizmodo, you know the only way we roll is in gold. That’s why we are happy to present Amosu’s new line of 24 carat gold (plated) iPods. Covered in hardened mirror gold, users can stare triumphantly at their beautiful, golden visage while rocking out to the new [fill in harp pop star of choice].

So how much will a golden iPod set you back?

30GB = $600
80GB = $800
Their Nanos don’t seem to be listed.

I know what you are thinking—”that’s way less than my golden sunglasses/yacht/pet cost me”. The only downfall is that the face is not covered in the glorious godmetal, so onlookers from certain angles will think that you are just some middle class hobo. Just flash them your best gold-toothed smile and they’ll know who’s boss.

AT&T to aim the iPhone at business users

AT&T plans to market the iPhone to business users in addition to consumers, but analysts aren’t recommending that enterprises supply workers with the phones.

Cingular, which acquired AT&T Wireless, recently decided that the iPhone will appeal to business users and the operator is now working hard to ensure that its back-end enterprise billing and support systems will accommodate the device when it ships, said a source familiar with the company’s plans, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

An AT&T spokesman said he couldn’t comment on the iPhone beyond when it will become available and its price. The phone is expected to become available in June. It will cost $499 or $599 depending on the memory size. Initially, AT&T will be the exclusive provider of the iPhone, although other service providers are expected to eventually start selling it as well.

the::unwired Reviews The Samsung SGH-i600 / Cingular Blackjack JAVOSkin Skin Case

The summer is coming soon (if not here already) and I thought about better protecting my latest gadget - the Samsung SGH-i600 Windows Mobile Smartphone while biking and commuting. As a matter of fact, as useful and good looking leather cases are for Pocket PCs, I don’t like leather cases for my mobile phones - I never used a leather case for a mobile phone since 1993.

I either carry my phones in my hand or just want to drop it into my pocket and that’s it. So I came across JAVOedge’s innovative JAVOSkins which are designed to protect devices from scratch and impact damage while retaining the sleek look of the device. Perfect I thought and the fine folks from JAVOedge send me one to be reviewed here and used after.

The JAVOSkin features strategically placed cut-outs to allow maximum usability. With these cut-outs, using the case would feel as though the case wasn’t on the device at all. JAVOSkin is easy on your hands with it’s soft texture. Made out of specially blended silicon materials, it can stretch and flex to cushion your device from hard bumps and falls. The EAD (Enhanced Anti Dust) coating gives the JAVOSkin case a softer surface to grab and significantly reduce dust which would accumulate on the surface. With this low-profile case, you get the best of both worlds: the device will remain fully usable, stylish and protected.
