Palm To Offer Free Windows Mobile 6 Upgrade for Treo 750

treo750.jpgPalm has officially confirmed a statement made earlier by one of its executives: a Windows Mobile 6 upgrade will be released for the Treo 750.

In addition, company representatives at the CTIA Wireless show in Orlando told Brighthand that this operating system upgrade will be available for free.

What’s Going to Change?

Some of the improvements in Windows Mobile 6 include the ability to display HTML-formatted email.

It will also sport improved versions of the Mobile Office applications, bringing them closer to their desktop equivalents. These will also offer support for the new file formats in Microsoft Office 2007.

In addition, Microsoft has fine tuned the look of the operating system.

Along with the other new features in Windows Mobile 6, the upgrade will bring an additional enhancement to the Treo 750: HSDPA support.

“Windows Mobile delivers to the small screen a rich and familiar experience that meets people’s work and life needs while on the go … all with a single device,” said Chris Hill, group product manager, Microsoft “We are excited to work closely with Palm to offer a Windows Mobile 6 update to existing Treo 750 users so that they can take advantage of new and enhanced productivity and advanced communication capabilities.”

Palm did not give a specific timetable for the release of this update, only that it will be out “later this year”.

Nintendo reportedly planning another Modchip-busting revision

wiinja.jpgEven though there’s no love lost between Sony and Nintendo fanboys, the two ancient rivals may soon have one thing in common: an ongoing battle with their respective deities over modding their precious consoles for homebrew. PSP owners are well aware of the epic back-and-forth struggle between hackers like Fanjita and Dark_Alex and the obviously-frustrated firmware programmers over at Sony, and now DigiTimes (they of the rather dubious Apple rumor track record, mind you) is reporting that Wii lovers may soon be faced with yet another round of modchip-nullifying hardware revisions from Nintendo. The good news is that — as usual — the altered circuit layout shouldn’t thwart modders for more than a few weeks at most, even if Nintendo decides to move over to so-called ball grid array IC packaging according to “providers of Wii modification services in Taiwan.” Still, if these rumors turn out to be true, it would seem that Nintendo is pretty committed to tripping up the Wiinjas and TeamCyclopses of the world, and making your choice of their wares just a little more difficult.

iPhone shown off at CTIA — by AT&T COO

iphone-ctia.jpgHey, hey, iPhone fans, guess what. The iPhone is like, totally here at CTIA. The bad news? It’s not exactly tethered to a display case or even enclosed in glass as it was at MWSF — it was dutifully and briefly whipped out by AT&T COO Randall Stephenson, who showed a video demo (not on the phone itself) and let everybody know AT&T had received over a million customer inquiries regarding the iPhone. How many of those will transform into sales we don’t know, but damned if they don’t have peoples’ attention.
